Description:

• This course combines classroom instruction with practical hands-on training to provide handlers with a scientifically grounded understanding of narcotics odor detection and its operational application.
• During the lecture portion, participants will examine the science of odor production, movement, persistence, contamination, and environmental influence. The course explains how narcotic odor exists in the environment, how detection dogs locate odor, and the factors that may affect canine behavior during deployments. Topics include odor availability, vapor movement, airflow, residual odor, secondary odor transfer, contamination, and common misconceptions surrounding detection canines.
• Participants will also explore how scientific principles apply to real-world deployments involving vehicles, residences, parcels, luggage, outdoor environments, and large-area searches. Emphasis is placed on understanding why dogs behave the way they do rather than simply recognizing an alert.
• The course further covers operational articulation and documentation, including deployment reports, affidavits, and courtroom testimony. Attendees will learn how to accurately explain canine behavior, environmental conditions, search methodology, and training in a manner that is clear, objective, and scientifically supportable.
• The practical training portion allows working teams to immediately apply classroom concepts through instructor-guided search scenarios. Exercises are designed to demonstrate odor movement, airflow, search strategy, behavioral change, sourcing, inaccessible odor, residual odor challenges, and other operational problems commonly encountered in the field. Throughout each exercise, instructors provide individualized feedback to help handlers better interpret canine behavior and strengthen decision-making.
• Working positions are limited to 15 handler/dog teams to maximize individual instruction and practical training time. Audit/observer positions are available for those wishing to attend the classroom instruction without participating in the hands-on exercises.
• The objective of this course is to provide handlers with a stronger scientific understanding of narcotics odor detection while improving operational decision-making, search strategy, documentation, and articulation. By integrating classroom education with practical application, participants leave with knowledge and techniques that can be immediately implemented in both training and real-world deployments.
